Do I need further tests for gluten intolerance?

Asked by loubeelou on 24 November 2011 | Viewed 383 times

I have all the symptoms of a person with Coeliac’s disease but my blood tests came back negative! So I might have gluten intolerance. Does anyone know or, has anyone had, other tests to confirm intolerances? Like those skin prick tests?
Thanks grin

Hi - Sounds like I’m in the same boat as you.  Had blood tests with my GP, also negative.  Although I hear that you can get false negatives.  I have been unwell with coeliac symptoms as well and my GP/dietician have finally referred me to a specialist, so will see what he has to say.  The thought of eating gluten full on prior to an endoscopy is really frightening for me.  Last time I ate alot of wheat I had to have two weeks off work and I’m still not right!  One of my major symptoms is reflux/heartburn.  Have you had this at all?  I think that coeliac is heredity so would imagine that I only have a gluten intolerance!
Good luck.  You may need an endoscopy to confirm your diagnosis!

Hi Lynda
Poor you! Yes I get heartburn but it isn’t as bad as yours :-( My doc prescribes me Losec which helps that. My Main symptoms are nausea, fatigue, headaches and stomach pain. I have been GF for 4 days so far and am already feeling better! If this works, I don’t think I’ll bother with further tests. I have several Coeliacs in the family so I am probably going that way too! Life is full of challenges ain’t it?!

I have been thru similar circumstances, but mostly with terrible lower groin/stomache pains.  After getting a second medical opinion and many blood test/faecal tests etc. they had no answer.  A friend suggested I had an allergy test done which you can do online - www.allergenics.co.nz - $109.00 for the test which is done with a lock of hair.  Takes about three weeks to come back with a full report of what you body is allergic/intolerant to.  Wheat was my biggest enemy with gluten a little lower, so I am avoiding gluten where possible, and it’s working!!! I feel so much better.  Good luck.

Hi, I have been coeliacs for about 4 years now. When i was first diagnosed it was from a blood test, then i had to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy which determined the disease. My daughter suffers also from cramps and other symptoms which are very similar to coealiacs. You will find that irritable bowel syndrome has almost the same symptoms as coeliacs disease. I would suggest that you be very careful with what you eat and monitor your condition, take notes on what symptoms you have after certain foods and go from there…I wish you luck..
